Fast Facts: Pandas – Part V

Carl Kerby

Welcome to Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope. I’m Carl Kerby.

Do you remember what President Nixon received as a gift when he visited China in 1972? That’s right. Two baby panda cubs, Ling-Ling and Hsing-Hsing.  They were put in the National Zoo in Washington D.C. and we’ve been fascinated with these captivating creatures ever since.

Most people don’t realize that Giant Pandas aren’t always quiet – they can bleat, roar, growl, and even honk while sneezing. Also, take a look at that fur – it’s perfectly created by God for their environment. While a panda looks soft and cuddly to you and me, their fur is actually very thick and wiry. It keeps them warm enough that they don’t need to hibernate!

The panda’s unique black and white markings are under their fur as well – their black skin perfectly matches their black fur. The same goes for the white skin and the white fur. What perfect pigmentation! This allows for camouflage in the shady, misty forest and also helps absorb the warmth of the sun.

Hope to see you on the next Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope. Until then, stay bold!
