The Greatest Commandment (Part 1)

Welcome!

I’m Bub Kuns, and today we’re talking about the Greatest Commandment.

In Mark 12, Jesus was asked which of God’s commands was greatest. Interestingly, He didn’t cite one of the Ten Commandments, such as not killing or stealing. Instead, He responded by quoting Deuteronomy 6:5: “And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength” (Mark 12:30). Jesus said that the greatest commandment was LOVING GOD.

But what does it mean to love God with ALL YOUR HEART?

Well, the heart is the most profound part of our being — It’s where our real loyalties and passions are. It’s the core of who we are.

As John MacArthur said, loving God with all our heart means to “[l]ove God with the deepest, purest, truest part of you, your deepest identity.” (MacArthur, John. Loving God (Mark 12:28–34). Grace to You, Grace Community Church)

Now what does it mean to love God with all our MIND? Well, we’ll discuss that another time.
