Socialists Dominating Dem Primaries

A recent Pew Research Center survey found that thirty-two percent of Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents now say they like political leaders who identify as “Democratic Socialists.” That is nearly one in three. Among liberal Democrats specifically, that number jumps to fifty-two percent — a majority. And among Democrats under thirty, nearly four in ten express favorable views of Democratic Socialist leaders. This is not a fringe movement anymore. Those are not the numbers of a movement on the margins. That is a movement that has taken over the left wing of a major American political party — and is now coming for the rest of it.

The electoral results confirm it. Just weeks ago, Democratic Socialist-backed candidates knocked out two sitting Democrat congressmen in New York City. Then, in Colorado, a Democratic Socialist defeated a fifteen-term incumbent in a Democratic primary. House Democrats called it a wake-up call. One lawmaker described it as proof that the Democratic Socialists of America’s strategy of targeting young, college-educated voters is, in their own words, literally their entire playbook — and it’s working.

The movement’s electoral base tells you everything about how it sustains itself. Support for Democratic Socialist candidates is strongest among white, young, college-educated, upper-income Democrats — precisely the voters who consume the most political news and show up most reliably in primary elections. As one analyst put it, these voters make up a larger share of the primary electorate than the general population numbers suggest. That means the only surprising thing about the DSA’s recent wins is that there haven’t been more of them.

And here is a number that should stop every American cold. A separate poll found that only eight percent of Democrats consider the United States the greatest country in the world. Nearly four in ten said they are ashamed to be American.

This is what happens when generations are taught to despise their own country rather than understand and defend it. So-called democratic socialism cannot not survive in a patriotic population. It thrives in one that has been convinced America is not worth loving. This is one of the biggest battlegrounds ahead of us, and we must show up for the fight.
