Fast Facts: Rhinoceros – Part V

Carl Kerby

Welcome to Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope, I’m Carl Kerby.

Today, were checking out the skincare routine of the rhinoceros. Believe it or not, these thick-skinned mammals are easily sunburned, and because they are, they love to wallow in muddy pools. Soaking helps them cool off, and it protects their skin from harmful UV rays and aggravating bites.

The rhino’s best friend, the ox-pecker bird, also helps protect their skin. The ox pecker perches on the rhino’s back, consumes pesky parasites, and offers a loud cry to alert the rhino of potential dangers.

Rhinos are herbivores that munch from dawn to dusk (and sometimes back to dawn again), eating up to 120 pounds of grass, shrubs, trees, and bark in order to maintain their impressive size. The Black Rhino has a hooked lip that helps it pull leaves off branches. In contrast, the White Rhino has a wide mouth perfectly designed to consume grass faster than you can mow! This speedy eater even consumes toxic plants and survives without water for 4 days!

Overall, I would say rhinos are just another remarkable example of God’s perfect design. Check back again soon; there are even more amazing animals to discover!  Until then, stay bold!
