Fruit of the Spirit (Part 10)

Welcome!

I’m Bub Kuns, and today we’re talking about the Fruit of the Spirit again.

Did you know that one of the best indicators of a successful life is SELF-CONTROL?

In a 40-year study, The American Scientist magazine found that “childhood self-control strongly predicts adult success, in people of high or low intelligence, in rich or poor, and does so throughout the entire population, with a step change in health, wealth, and social success at every level of self-control.” (Moffitt, Terrie E., et al. “A Gradient of Childhood Self-Control Predicts Health, Wealth, and Public Safety.” Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, vol. 108, no. 7, 2011, pp. 2693–2698)

The Holy Spirit helps believers rightly manage their thoughts and actions during challenging circumstances instead of BEING CONTROLLED by those circumstances. SELF-CONTROL also keeps us from giving into cravings, emotions, and temptations, and helps align our actions with God’s will.

As Jerry Bridges said, “Self-control is the exercise of inner strength under the direction of sound judgement that enables us to do, think, and say the things that are pleasing to God.” (Bridges, Jerry. The Practice of Godliness. NavPress, 1996)

Now, what about the GREATEST COMMANDMENT? We’ll discuss that another time.
