Welcome!
I’m Bub Kuns, and today we’re talking about the virtue of loyalty.
Can friends be counted on in today’s world?
Well, according to research cited in Psychology Today, 68% of those surveyed said they had been betrayed by a friend (Yager, Jan. “What You Can Do When Your BFF Turns Your Worst Enemy.” Psychology Today, 19 Apr. 2017) .That’s nearly 7 out of 10! Needless to say, we live in a culture where commitment to others is rare. But the idea of loyalty is the idea of being faithfully committed to the welfare of our loved ones, even when that means sacrifice on our part.
Now, there’s no greater example of loyalty in Scripture than Jesus. After discipling the 12 Apostles for three years, He kept His commitment to them by laying down His life for them even after they abandoned Him. After his resurrection, He appeared to them and let them know He didn’t abandon them.
See, part of loyalty is keeping a promise, and Jesus promises to those who are in Christ that He will never leave or forsake them.
Now, what other virtues should be important to believers? We’ll discuss that another time.
