Welcome!
I’m Bub Kuns, and today we’re talking about the virtue of determination.
According to research by Microsoft and LinkedIn, half of Americans are considering resigning from their jobs. (Microsoft. “Microsoft and LinkedIn Release 2024 Work Trend Index: Three out of Four People Use AI at Work.” Microsoft News Center, 13 May 2024)
Along the same lines, The National Institute of Health found that half of students who had been enrolled in some type of music lessons no longer are. (Hallam, Susan. “The Power of Music: Its Impact on the Intellectual, Social and Personal Development of Children and Young People.” International Journal of Music Education, vol. 28, no. 3, 2010, pp. 269–289. PubMed Central [PMC])
Likewise, the American Reading Habits Survey found that over half of adults could not even finish a book begun that year. (YouGov. “Share of U.S. Adults Who Read or Listened to Books in the Past Year.” Statista, 2024) In other words, people today are QUITTERS!
In contrast, determination is the idea of keeping our focus on the goal and persevering, even when facing obstacles and hardship. Determination is the difference between pressing on and giving up. In fact, it’s only when a person shows determination in the face of setbacks that he makes any headway towards his goals.
As C.S. Lewis said, “Failures, repeated failures, are finger posts on the road to achievement.” (Lewis, C. S. https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/7718796-failures-repeated-failures-are-finger-posts-on-the-road-to)
Now, what other virtues should be important to believers? We’ll discuss that another time.
