Welcome!
Today, we’re talking about depression.
Would you believe that the more religious you are, the less depressed you’ll be?
According to the Gallup Organization, those who are very religious are 17% less likely to suffer depression than the non-religious, and 24% less likely to suffer depression than those who are only somewhat religious. (see Newport, Frank, et al. “Very Religious Americans Report Less Depression, Worry.” Gallup.com, 1 Dec. 2010, news.gallup.com/poll/144980/religious-americans-report-less-depression-worry.aspx)
This makes perfect sense to the believer, who can trust that God will provide for his needs, sustain him in trials, and comfort him in sorrow — on top of offering him salvation though Christ.
As Charles Spurgeon said, “I find myself frequently depressed … And I find no better cure for that depression than to trust in the Lord with all my heart, and seek to realize afresh the power of the peace-speaking blood of Jesus, and His infinite love in dying upon the cross to put away all my transgressions.” (“Charles Spurgeon Quote.” A-Z Quotes, www.azquotes.com/quote/565241)
And what should believers know about pop psychology? We’ll discuss that another time.
