Welcome!
Today, we’re talking about self-esteem.
Some believers today try to integrate self-esteem ideology with Christian faith. But self-esteem and biblical Christianity stem from completely different worldviews and can’t be reconciled.
As John MacArthur said, “Self-esteemism is based on an unbiblical perspective. It is diametrically opposed to the truth of human depravity. Moreover, while Scripture commends self-control as a fruit of the Spirit, the Bible has nothing positive to say about self-esteem, self-love, or any other variety of self-centeredness.” (MacArthur, John. “Your Child’s Greatest Need.” Grace to You, 18 Aug. 2016, www.gty.org/articles/A359/your-childs-greatest-need)
A basic problem most of us have is that we esteem ourselves too much — not that we don’t esteem ourselves enough. In contrast, the Bible teaches we should esteem GOD but view ourselves with humility.
As Charles Spurgeon said, “Anything which leads to self-esteem leads to the utmost jeopardy. If you have a lowly opinion of yourself, I congratulate you; for this is a main element of safety.” (“My Hourly Prayer.” The Spurgeon Center, www.spurgeon.org/resource-library/sermons/my-hourly-prayer/#flipbook)
And what should Christians think about DEPRESSION? We’ll discuss that another time.
