Welcome to Apologetics with Carl Kerby!
Today, we’re talking about annihilationism.
Annihilationism – the idea that those rejecting Christ will simply “cease to exist” instead of going to Hell – is not SCRIPTURAL. After all, Hebrews 9:27 tells us, “[I]t is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” (KJV)
But the idea of evildoers escaping all punishment in the afterlife is also not LOGICAL.
Scripture tells us again and again that God is JUST, and it would be UNJUST for God not to give consequences for sin.
As Pastor Eric Davis said, “Annihilationism fails to account both for the holiness of God and the severity of sin. Sin against an infinitely holy God demands coinciding punishment.”
The good news is that God’s justice was satisfied when Jesus Christ took the punishment of our sins on the cross, making it possible for us to have eternal life in Heaven through His sacrificial atonement.
What else is wrong with annihilationism? We’ll discuss that another time.
