Scientists studied the giant pink queen conch’s shell and found a highly resilient composite structure made from aragonite and protein. Its layered architecture disperses stress into many tiny cracks, making it far more fracture-resistant than ordinary aragonite. Researchers hope to apply these principles to stronger materials, bridges, and spacecraft.
