Christian headlines recently reported on a Kentucky teen working at a Kroger store who used his own money to pay for a man’s groceries when the teen realized the man couldn’t pay for all the groceries he’d selected. This young man explained his generosity to this stranger saying, “Just do something helpful for people. Let them know that God’s there for them and make sure they have a good day.” The report said the teen’s mom was proud of him and that she realized he’d been listening to what she had been trying to instill in him as he grew up.

This incident happened because a parent intentionally built into a son principles for living selflessly. I certainly can’t prove it, but I suspect this teen boy has seen his mom do similar things for others, and I’m guessing her example was even more powerful than her words. Oh the power of parents who teach their children by word and deed.
