Does John 21:18-19 Disprove Imminency?

Welcome to Prophecy Q & A with Jimmy DeYoung!

John 21:18-19 – “Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not. This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.”

Imminency was not in place at the time that Peter was alive on the Earth. I do agree that John 21:18-19 indicates that Peter would have to grow old and die so Jesus Christ could not rapture the church during that period of time.

Acts 23:11 says that not only would Peter have to die, but Paul the apostle was going to go into Rome and preach. It took him about two years in jail in Caesarea, and it took a year to get to Rome. Then, he preached. In Philippians 4, he was in the household of Caesar as a prisoner, chained to a guard on a daily basis. Many came to know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior in Rome through the Apostle Paul. He ended up establishing the church in Rome. It wasn’t Peter who went to Rome, but Paul.

The Lord knows what was going to be included in the Word of God. He said that He was going to give John the Revelator all of the information needed for everyone to know about the end times in Revelation in 95 A.D. The imminent return of Jesus Christ could not have happened before Peter died and before Paul preached in Rome and before the Book of Revelation was given to John. This way, we would know how the end times would play out.

I do believe in the imminent return of Jesus Christ as of today. The Bible says that it could happen at any moment. In 1 Thessalonians 4, the apostle Paul wrote about the Rapture and said that we, including himself, will be caught up to be with Jesus Christ. Paul believed in the imminent return of Jesus Christ. He didn’t have the fact that the Book of Revelation was going to be presented to John the Revelator in 95 A.D. Paul thought that the rapture could happen in his time.

Jimmy DeYoung was a prophecy teacher and journalist who travelled the country and the world educating the Body of Christ of the future events foretold in God’s prophetic Word. His goal was to equip Christians with the knowledge and understanding of what God’s Word says will happen someday soon, so that they can make better decisions today. Dr. DeYoung went home to be with his Savior on August 15, 2021.
