I believe that Satan has already picked the one that he wants to be the Antichrist. The Antichrist has not appeared as of yet. He will not appear until after the Rapture of the Church. The Antichrist does not know the time of the Rapture of the Church. Only God the Father knows that. God will tell Jesus to go get His children. Jesus will come and shout and call us up to be with Him. Satan does not know when the Rapture of the Church is. Satan understands that the time is getting close. He knows that he has a short time (Revelation 12:13). It will be a physical, lost man because Satan will energize him (Revelation 13:2). This is the most detailed passage on the Antichrist. The dragon (Revelation 12:9) is interpreted as Satan, the devil himself. The dragon will give the Antichrist his power and his seat of authority.
If that individual should die (Satan can take life but cannot give life; he cannot guarantee that the one he selected will still be alive down the road), Satan would have to have one standing by on the sidelines, ready to fill in as the Antichrist.
No, the person who will be the Antichrist does not know that he will be the Antichrist. Satan has picked the person already and is ready to name him as soon as the Rapture of the Church takes place.
