It’s August 27, 1776. I’m at the Battle of Long Island with Joseph Martin.
JG: “Joseph, hundreds of Yankees are dying out there. Is there any hope?”
JM: “John, it looks like we are surrounded. We’re pushed into a little corner of Long Island. Ten thousand British troops are in front of us, and a 20,000 Red Coat naval force is behind us. I don’t know what we’re going to do.”
General Washington, in this desperate situation, kept his wits about him and retreated safely across the East River to New York to fight another day.
