John Trumbull – August 1, 1786

Experience the American dream with today’s Patriot of the Past interview. I’m your host, John Gillespie.

It’s August 1, 1786. I’m with John Trumbull, a famous painter and son of the governor of Connecticut.

JG: “Mr. Trumbull, what is the latest painting you’re working on?”

JT: “Mr. Gillespie, Governor Thomas Jefferson has asked me to paint the signing of the Declaration of Independence, so future Americans can have a vision of its historical importance.”

John Trumbull, an officer in General Washington’s staff, took eight years to create the famous painting that hangs in the Capitol Rotunda in Washington, DC.
