George Washington – April 30, 1789

Experience the American dream with today’s Patriot of the Past interview. I’m your host, John Gillespie.

It’s April 30, 1789, I’m at Federal Hall in New York City at the inauguration of George Washington.

JG: “President Washington, how exciting that many want to call you “His Highness” and “His Excellence.”

GW: “John, no. It is not exciting. It is a title I despise for I am a mere mortal. Only God is King. We just fought a war to ensure that no man would rule over another. Mr. Gillespie, in America, I serve to secure that freedom. No more, no less.”

George Washington did secure our freedom as he humbly and bravely served as our first president.
