James Madison – January 5, 1788

Experience the American dream with today’s Patriot of the Past interview. I’m your host, John Gillespie.

It’s January 5, 1788. I’m with James Madison, who is busy writing Federalist Paper #51.

JG: “Excuse me, Mr. Madison, could you share some of #51 with us?”

JM: “Why, of course, Mr. Gillespie. What is government itself but the greatest of all reflections on human nature? If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary.”

James Madison studied human nature and he understood the delicate balance between enough government to protect us, but not too much to hurt us.
