Fast Facts: Birds (Part 5)

Welcome to Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope!

I’m Carl Kerby, and we’re talking about birds.

There are over 200 different types of birds that cover themselves with crushed ants, or even let live ants crawl on them.  It’s called “anting!” Some believe that there’s an acid that the ants secrete on the bird’s feathers and skin that kill mites and fungus. Others say that when the ants release their acid, the birds can then eat them!  No one really knows why they do this.

Did you know that the baby Hoatzin has claws on their wings?  They use them to crawl back up to their nest when they have to jump out into the water below to avoid predators.

Fact is, God made birds diverse.  For instance, the Whistling Swan has up to 25,000 feathers, while a hummingbird only has about 1,000.

Oops, time’s up, so we’ll have to talk about feathers in the next Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope.

Until then … stay bold!
