Fast Facts: Ostrich (Part 2)

Welcome to Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope!

I’m Carl Kerby. We’re looking at the long-legged and powerful ostrich. Have you ever noticed their unique feet?

The ostrich is the only bird in the world to have just two toes! This is astounding considering that they weigh the size of two adults!

When an ostrich kicks, it’s with a deadly force of 2,000 pounds – strong enough to kill a lion!

Each toe has a four-inch claw which rips open its victim with immense speed. Besides self-defense, their toes are useful for digging nests and scratching in the dirt for a variety of plants and small creatures to eat.

Ostriches are known to eat anything out of curiosity, including rocks. They carry around two pounds of stones in their stomachs to aid digestion!

Remarkably, they can survive without water for almost two weeks!
