Fast Facts: Bears (Part 5)

Welcome to Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope!

I’m Carl Kerby.

Have you ever wondered why Proverbs 17:12 says it’s better to meet a bear robbed of her cubs than a fool bent on folly? That’s some pretty strong language as we talk about the world’s most aggressive mother.

In midwinter, the female Grizzly Bear will wake up and give birth to two cubs. She will then return to sleep while the tiny 1-pound babies nestle in and nurse. Born blind, furless, and toothless, these cubs are totally reliant on Mum.

By spring the cubs have grown fur and teeth, and  the new family is ready to venture outside. With a 50 % survival rate against sickness, starvation, and predators, it is no wonder that God made these Mama Bears extremely aggressive and protective of her cubs. She is fierce enough to fight to the death with much larger males in defense of her babies! Perhaps that’s why these females typically outlive males in the wild.

Check back with us again to discover more amazing creatures. Until then, stay bold!
