Fast Facts: Bats (Part 5)

Welcome to Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope!

I’m Carl Kerby, and we’re talking about the special equipment God gave bats.

Nectar-eating bats have the highest metabolism rate of any mammal.  They burn half of their body fat daily.

To be effective, they have a very special tongue. Looking at their tongue under a microscope you see they have little hairs on their tongues.  That increases the amount of nectar they scoop up with each lick.

But that’s nothing compared with the Tube Lipped Nectar bat!

This rare mouse-sized bat from South America has the longest tongue (proportionally) of all mammals. Its tongue is 150% of its body length! How’d you like to have a 9-foot tongue?

How do they keep something that long inside of their mouth?  Fact is … God created a cavity between the heart and sternum where the tongue is stored when it’s not in use.

There’s more, but we’ll talk about that in the next Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope. Until then, stay bold!
