Fast Facts: Rhinoceros – Part III

Carl Kerby

Welcome to Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope, I’m Carl Kerby.

Today, we’re talking about a colossal mammal – the rhinoceros. Next to the elephant, the White Rhino is the largest land creature you will meet. They come in at 6-feet tall and a massive 5,000 pounds! That’s the weight of FIVE Grand Pianos!

But this 3-toed mammal has another surprise in store – its speed! Known for being extremely territorial, when a rhino catches a whiff of something unwelcomed near them, they will charge headfirst. Imagine a barreling behemoth coming towards you faster than Usain Bolt (who’s top speed is about 30-miles-per-hour)!

What is remarkable is that they run with all their weight on their toes. This helps protect their sensitive footpad as they charge through low shrub. These “twinkle toes” are extremely agile, too – changing direction without losing speed as they charge.

But the most threatening thing has to be their giant horn. Oh, no … looks like we’re out of time for today, so the horn will have to wait. Until then, stay bold!
