Fast Facts: Rhinoceros – Part I

Carl Kerby

Welcome to Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope, I’m Carl Kerby.

Do you know what is big and fast and is known to “crash” a party?

A herd of rhinos … no joke!

A herd of rhinos is actually called a “crash,” much like a group of birds is called a “flock.” What is even less known, however, is the sounds that rhinos make. While some sounds are infrasonic (below human hearing levels), a lot of them are things we can understand:

  • a growl for dominance
  • sneezing or screaming in alarm
  • a squeal of excitement
  • a snort of relaxation

God designed these beauties to communicate in a large variety of ways … and in one highly unusual way: their poop! Since each rhino’s dung has a unique smell, it easily identifies its owner as young or old, male or female. Rhinos produce 45 pounds of dung a day in about 25 piles or middens, This clearly helps mark their territory!

That is one perfectly designed form of communication for an animal of excellent smell! But more on that next time. Until then, stay bold!
