Fast Facts: Geckos – Part III

Carl Kerby

Welcome to Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope. I’m Carl Kerby.

Have you ever stubbed your toe in the middle of the night?  Man … I hate it when that happens! Well, if you had the gecko’s incredible night vision, it would save you from ever hurting yourself again.

There’s actually two types of geckos – those who are awake during the day; they have round pupils. Then there are those who hunt at night and have vertical pupils, like a cat. But unlike cats, both types of gecko have no eyelids – instead they have a clear membrane over their eyes that they lick clean with their long, flexible tongues.

Since most geckos are active and hunt at night, they need to have excellent night vision in order to catch their prey. The Helmet Gecko has a set of eyes that are 350 times more sensitive than a human’s eyes. It can even see color in dim moonlight!

Awesome, right?

But, did you know that there are geckos that not only walk on the ground and climb walls, but they can also … well … that’s for next time. Stay bold!
