Fast Facts: Geckos – Part II

Carl Kerby

Welcome to Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope. I’m Carl Kerby.

Have you ever tried to catch a gecko, or have you ever watched as another animal tried to catch one? Not only is the gecko incredibly quick, but it has an amazing defense mechanism that usually makes girls scream.  Do you know what it is?  Well, when you get close to catching a gecko, it can detach from its tail.

Say what?

Yep … you heard that right!  A gecko can release a section of its tail when chased by a predator. The section of tail keeps wiggling around on the ground and distracts the predator. That gives the gecko an opportunity to make a fast-footed escape!

A gecko’s tail has even more God-designed purposes:

  • It helps the gecko maintain its balance as it climbs
  • It stores food like a camel hump helping the gecko survive when times are tough
  • It comes in marvelous designs which helps the gecko blend in with its surroundings

Awesome!

Wait until you hear about the gecko’s incredible night vision. Until next time, stay bold!
