Fast Facts: Aardvarks – Part IV

Carl Kerby

Welcome to Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope! I’m Carl Kerby and, today, we’re going to talk about the aardvark and the aardvark cucumber!

The aardvark and the cucumber have a symbiotic relationship, where both organisms benefit in some way.

The cucumber benefits the aardvark by providing moisture and nourishment.

The aardvark benefits the cucumber by digging it up, eating it, and, eventually, using the bathroom, which plants and fertilizes the next batch of these cucumbers!

It would be “game over” for this cucumber without the aardvark because it can’t grow on it’s own. The skin is very tough and it grows too deep in the soil for the seeds to ever sprout by themselves.

Speaking of eating, did you know that the aardvark swallows its food whole? This is because… oops! Our time’s up so we’ll talk about that in the next Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope. Until then… stay bold!
