If you grew up in the 60’s and 70’s, you probably remember a program that captivated many. It was called, “The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau.” This television documentary series was about underwater marine life and the philosophy of Mr. Cousteau. For that time period he was one of what we’d call the radical environmentalists who elevated the environment over mankind. Some of the statements he made include:
Population growth is the primary source of environmental damage.
In November 1991, Cousteau gave an interview to the UNESCO Courier, in which he stated that he was in favor of human population control and population decrease. He said:
“What should we do to eliminate suffering and disease? It’s a wonderful idea but perhaps not altogether a beneficial one in the long run. If we try to implement it we may jeopardize the future of our species.”
He went on to say, “It’s terrible to have to say this. World population must be stabilized and to do that we must eliminate 350,000 people per day. This is so horrible to contemplate that we shouldn’t even say it. But the general situation in which we are involved is lamentable.”
This was said decades ago, and sadly remarks like this have not been just stored away in the ash bin of history, they are on display today. Recently those in academia from major universities around the world made an argument that we need to reduce our population by the year 2200 to just 4 billion people. Now keep in mind we are presently 8.3 billion people and it’s projected to peak before this century is over. So they are talking about reducing our population less than half of what it is today. They are saying this is necessary for sustainability. These are basically the same arguments as Jacques Cousteau.
