The Greatest Commandment (Part 2)

Welcome!

I’m Bub Kuns, and today we’re talking about the Greatest Commandment.

Jesus said the greatest commandment was loving God with “all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” (Mark 12:30 ESV)

But what does it mean to love God with all your MIND?

Well, the mind refers to the intellect, the sphere of rational ideas, imagination, and decision-making. And humans do a lot of thinking! In fact, according to Dr. Fred Luskin at Stanford University, the human mind produces an incredible 60,000 thoughts per day! (Comaford, Christine. “Got Inner Peace? 5 Ways to Get It Now.” Forbes, 4 Apr. 2012)

Loving God with our mind means that our capacity to think is not only captivated but also brimming with love for Christ.

As theologian J. P. Moreland said, “[D]eveloping a Christian mind is part of the very essence of discipleship unto the Lord Jesus.” (Moreland, J. P. Love Your God with All Your Mind: The Role of Reason in the Life of the Soul. Tyndale House, 2014)

That’s why Romans 12:2 says: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind …” (ESV) A renewal that begins with following Jesus.

And what about loving God with our SOUL? We’ll discuss that another time.
