Welcome!
I’m Bub Kuns, and today we’re talking about the Fruit of the Spirit again.
According to the Gallup Organization, “[U]nhappiness is now at a record high … people feel more anger, sadness, pain, worry and stress than ever before.” (Clifton, Jon. “The Global Rise of Unhappiness.” Gallup, 15 Sept. 2022)
In the midst of our increasingly unhappy world, Galatians 5 offers us JOY — an essential attribute of the Fruit of the Spirit. JOY differs from happiness in that its sense of satisfaction doesn’t come from our circumstances. In fact, JOY is confident hope we have in Jesus – an exuberant well-being that is constant no matter what the circumstances are. But JOY isn’t a quality that we can produce ourselves — it’s the demonstration of the Holy Spirit’s work in our hearts, and it’s a clear indication that we trust God.
As Charles Spurgeon said, “A genuine revival without joy in the Lord is as impossible as spring without flowers, or day-dawn without light.” (Spurgeon, Charles H. “A genuine revival without joy in the Lord is as impossible as spring without flowers, or day-dawn without light.” QuoteFancy)
Now what other attribute does the Fruit of the Spirit produce in believers? We’ll discuss that another time.
