Welcome!
I’m Bub Kuns, and today we’re talking about the Fruit of the Spirit.
In Galatians 5, the Apostle Paul lists sinful practices that characterize unbelievers’ lives, then he contrasts them with attributes that characterize believers’ lives, what we call “The Fruit of the Spirit”: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control
These attributes are not lofty goals we can achieve through our own effort. Instead, they are the qualities that the Holy Spirit produces in the hearts of believers as they yield themselves to Him.
As theologian Dietrich Bonhoffer said, “The fruit of the Spirit is a gift of God, and only He can produce it. They who bear it know as little about it as the tree knows of its fruit. They know only the power of Him on whom their life depends.” (Bonhoeffer, Dietrich. The Cost of Discipleship. Translated by R. H. Fuller, Touchstone, 1995)
Now what are the essential attributes of the Fruit of the Spirit? We’ll discuss that another time.
