The Importance of Biblical Literacy (Part 9)

Welcome!

Today, we’re talking about biblical literacy.

It’s no coincidence that the constant barrage of bad societal news — from homicides to suicides to out-of-wedlock births — coincides with a decline in our culture’s knowing and following Scripture.

You see, the Bible is not only good for our individual spiritual well-being, but it’s also God’s medicine cabinet for our societal well-being. Former President Ronald Reagan pointed this out when he said, “Within the covers of the Bible are the answers for all the problems men face.” In other words, our societal problems will only heal when we, as a society, turn back to God and do things His way. This starts with individuals letting Scripture guide them. As individuals change, the culture will change, too.

As Charles Spurgeon said, “A Bible that’s falling apart usually belongs to someone who isn’t.”

That’s true about individuals, but it’s also true about societies.

And why else is biblical literacy important? We’ll discuss that another time.
