Welcome!
Today, we’re talking about biblical literacy.
Knowing the Bible is important for saving faith in Christ, but it’s also important to understanding Western civilization.
As Dee Dyas and Esther Hughes say in their book The Bible in Western Culture, “Anyone who explores art, literature, history or music in any depth swiftly recognizes the Bible as a vital key to understanding and interpreting much of Western culture and history. For hundreds of years, human creativity was inspired and shaped by a Christian world view . . . Phrases such as ‘being a Good Samaritan,’ ‘turning the other cheek,’ and going the extra mile’ still pervade the English language . . . [and] the impact of biblical teaching can be seen in systems of law and ethics.”
So, in order to understand Western culture, a person must understand the Bible’s influence on it.
And why else is biblical literacy important? We’ll discuss that another time.
