Materialism (Part 4)

Welcome!

Today, we’re talking about materialism.

As believers, we know our true riches are stored in Heaven, not on earth. But sometimes even God’s people put too much faith in finances. Economic downturns, lost jobs and the pensions that go with them, and stock market dips can make us panic — and even worse, they can make us doubt God.

As author Kathy Keller said about materialism, “We cling to what cannot satisfy, nor even last, instead of walking by faith as citizens of heaven and enjoying the security of an inheritance that can never be shaken. Worse, when God, in his mercy, takes steps to wean us from our unhealthy dependence on this world, we accuse him of injustice, or unkindness, or lack of love.”

When God blesses us with material goods, as He sometimes does, let’s remember to keep our faith — not in the gift, but the GIVER.

And what other dangers does materialism pose? We’ll discuss them another time.
