Welcome!
Today, we’re talking about materialism.
Famed author John Steinbeck once said, “If I wanted to destroy a nation, I would give it too much, and I would have it on its knees, miserable, greedy, sick.”
That may seem farfetched until you remember that in ancient times the Great Wall of China was breeched— not because the wall wasn’t strong enough — but because the gatekeeper was BRIBED!
Materialism — the love of wealth and possessions — often leads to societal decline. But a culture’s downfall first begins with the downfall of individual human hearts.
That’s why in 1 Timothy 6:17, Paul gives this specific warning: “Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy.” (KJV)
As Francis Bacon once said, “Money is a great servant but a bad master.”
And what are other dangers of materialism? We’ll discuss them another time.
