Welcome!
Today, we’re talking about materialism.
Being materialistic hurts us as individuals — but it also hurts us as a culture.
According to the article “Materialism: A System that Eats Us from the Inside Out” by George Monbiot,
Materialism “is both socially destructive and self-destructive. It smashes the happiness and peace of mind of those who succumb to it. It’s associated with anxiety, depression and broken relationships.”
The point? As a society becomes more affluent, it also becomes more troubled. Instead of wealth being the answer to societal problems, it often leaves people disillusioned and disappointed.
You see, it’s only when we realize that the material possessions of this life are nothing in comparison with the eternal riches of knowing Christ that life truly has meaning.
As Charles Spurgeon said, “Nothing teaches us about the preciousness of the Creator as much as when we learn the emptiness of everything else.”
And what other danger does materialism pose? We’ll discuss them another time.
