Welcome!
Today, we’re talking about materialism.
According to a recent Harris poll, 60% of Americans want to be billionaires someday. But is having all the material wealth you want really as good as it sounds?
It turns out the answer is NO!
A study by the Journal Motivation and Emotion found that “as people become more materialistic, their well-being (good relationships, autonomy, sense of purpose and the rest) diminishes.” But the same study found that as people “become less materialistic, it rises.”
The takeaway? As counterintuitive as it may seem, materialism tends to ruin people’s lives and relationships with others.
Interestingly, the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary defines materialism as “the belief that money, possessions, and physical comforts are more important than spiritual values.”
You see, as Jesus said, our first love can’t be God AND money — one always takes place over the other.
And what other dangers does materialism pose? We’ll discuss them another time.
