SOCIALISM: A Christian Response (Part 5)

Welcome!

I’m Bub Kuns, and today we’re talking about a Christian response to socialism.

Did you know that Jesus taught that business owners deserve to benefit from their investments? Matthew 21 records Jesus’ parable of a businessman who hired laborers to work in his vineyard. Later, the businessman expected to receive earnings from his business. You’ll notice that Jesus condemns the laborers’ greed and violence — NOT the owner’s expectation of compensation — as the true injustice of the story. In contrast, socialism would condemn the owner of the vineyard and his financial achievement as unjust.

But as author Ayn Rand said, “America’s abundance was created…by the productive genius of free men who pursued their own personal interests and the making of their own private fortunes. They did not starve the people to pay for America’s industrialization. They gave the people better jobs, higher wages and cheaper goods.”

It’s free enterprise — not socialism — that reflects a biblical worldview and is better for society.

And how else should Christians respond to socialism? We’ll discuss that another time.
