Welcome!
Today, we’re talking about charity.
You know, what we believe really affects how much we help others. Historically, local churches and charitable organizations like The Salvation Army have long helped the needy specifically BECAUSE they were Christian.
As D. James Kennedy noted, “While poverty has always been a part of life on earth, the Church of Jesus Christ has done more … than any other institution in history to alleviate poverty.”
You see, historically, God’s people have taken seriously Jesus’ words that “[i]t is more blessed to give than to receive.” And although that giving can certainly be money, it can also be time, labor, or talent – anything sacrificed to help those in need in Christ’s name.
After all, as theologian F. F. Bruce said, “The followers of Jesus are children of God, and they should manifest the family likeness by doing good to all.”
How else should believers think about charity? We’ll discuss that another time.
