The Problem of Suffering (Part 6)

Welcome to Apologetics with Carl Kerby!

Today, we’re talking about the problem of suffering.

Suffering can be used as God’s means to refine us – like gold in the fire. But sometimes suffering may simply be the Lord’s way of turning our hearts to Him. 1 John tells us to “love not the world,” but when everything seems to be going great it’s hard not to be a little too satisfied with our lives here on earth – sometimes even making us hope Heaven holds off for a while. But the disappointments, heartbreak, and misery that eventually hit all of us – as painful as they are – can help us to see just how empty the hopes of this world can be and make us long to be with Christ.

As John Piper said, “This is God’s universal purpose for all Christian suffering: more contentment in God and less satisfaction in the world.”

How else should believers deal with suffering? We’ll discuss that another time.
