The Problem of Suffering (Part 5)

Welcome to Apologetics with Carl Kerby!

Today, we’re talking about the problem of suffering.

Poet William Butler Yeats once said, “If suffering brings wisdom, I would wish to be less wise.”

Ever feel that way – even as a believer? In all honesty, it’s hard for most of us to know how to respond to times of suffering, especially when the suffering doesn’t make sense.

But God never allows us to go through trials without there being some greater purpose in it. Often, that purpose is simply to stretch us spiritually. Now that doesn’t mean the stretching will be easy – in fact, sometimes suffering can make us so discouraged we want to give up.

But as Warren Wiersbe said, “Those times when you feel like quitting can be times of great opportunity, for God uses your troubles to help you grow.”

Like the old saying goes, “No pain, no gain.”

How else should believers view suffering? We’ll discuss that another time.
