Welcome to Apologetics with Carl Kerby!
Today, we’re talking about the problem of suffering.
Sometimes we suffer from our own bad choices. But sometimes we suffer when we haven’t done anything wrong at all – if you don’t believe me, check out the lives of Job, Joseph, or Daniel in the Bible.
So, how should believers deal with suffering when it’s not our fault – like getting fired from a job because we won’t compromise our integrity, or losing a friend because of our Christian beliefs?
Well, it’s during trials that we need to keep faith in God most. In fact, Psalm 112:7 gives us the godly man’s response to hardships: “He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord.” (ESV)
As theologian Michael Svigel said, “Theology 101: It takes great faith to trust God to calm the storm; it takes greater faith to keep trusting him when he doesn’t.”
How else should believers view suffering? We’ll discuss that another time.
