The Problem of Suffering (Part 1)

Welcome to Apologetics with Carl Kerby!

Today, we’re talking about the problem of suffering.

Why DO people suffer?

That’s a question people ask a lot. News of war, murder, starvation, and disease in our world remind us daily of the many hurting people around us.

Scripture tells us we live in a fallen world, stained by man’s sin, and believers can look forward to God’s complete redemption of earth when He returns to rule and reign.

But is there a purpose in suffering NOW? Well, the truth is that God often uses suffering to draw us closer to Himself because it’s in the hardest times that we tend to turn to God.

As C.S. Lewis said, “We can ignore even pleasure. But pain insists upon being attended to. God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is his megaphone to rouse a deaf world.”

What else should we think about suffering? We’ll discuss that another time.
