Welcome!
Today we’re talking about capital punishment.
Studies have shown that capital punishment is an effective deterrent to crimes like murder. But is the use of capital punishment really justified?
Well, Genesis 9 gives us the answer. In the aftermath of the global flood, God told Noah and his family, “Whoever sheds man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.” In other words, if a person has taken someone’s life, the only just and equal punishment is for the murderer’s life to be taken, too.
You see, the Bible tells us that the pre-flood world was FILLED WITH VIOLENCE; it was a world in which people didn’t value human life—life made in God’s image.
Starting with Noah, God gave civil authorities the responsibility to use capital punishment to ensure that society both values and protects life.
And what role should Christians take in government? We’ll discuss that another time.
