The Trump administration has done something no administration has done before. It has filed a federal lawsuit against a public school district specifically for hiding student gender transitions from parents. And the target is in the heart of the country: Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools.
The Justice Department’s complaint reveals that Unified School District No. 500 has had a policy in place since 2017 directing school officials to use students’ preferred names and pronouns and to evaluate gender transitions on a case-by-case basis whenever a student does not want their parents involved. In practice, that means a child can be socially transitioned at school, given a new name and new pronouns, all while mom and dad are kept completely in the dark.
That policy violates federal law on two fronts. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act — FERPA — gives parents the explicit right to access and review their children’s education records. The Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment gives parents the right to be informed when schools collect sensitive information about their children, including matters related to sexual behavior. Kansas City Public Schools has been violating both for nearly a decade.
Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon wrote in the Justice Department’s press release that parental rights are paramount in the operation of America’s public schools, and Kansas City does not know children better than their own parents. The Department will not tolerate school districts playing fast and loose with federal law in the service to radical gender ideology.
U.S. Attorney Ryan Kriegshauser [KRIGS-howser] was equally direct. Public education functions only when schools and parents engage in genuine partnership. When schools withhold information from parents, they undermine trust and disrupt the essential balance that families and educators are supposed to share.
This lawsuit comes on the heels of an August 2025 Department of Education investigation into four Kansas school districts — Topeka, Shawnee Mission, Olathe [oh-LAY-thuh], and Kansas City. All four are under investigation for allowing students to compete in sports based on gender identity without disclosing their transgender status to parents. The administration has threatened to pull federal funding from all four districts. A New Jersey school district was hit with a similar lawsuit just days earlier.
This is exactly the right message for the Administration to send. Parents have a right to know what is happening to their children at school. Period.
