The Greatest Commandment (Part 3)

Welcome!

I’m Bub Kuns, and today we’re talking about the Greatest Commandment again.

Jesus said the greatest commandment is,  “And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’” (Mark 12:30 ESV). Now, that’s a quote from Deuteronomy 6:5, known as the SHEMA.

And that will help us understand what loving God with all our soul means.

You see the  word “soul” is translated from the Hebrew word “nephesh” ( נֶפֶשׁ) which can mean “creature, lifeblood, person, or people” – sometimes, it’s even translated as “me” or “I.” In other words, the “soul” is the full human being – the life and the body. So to love God with all of your “soul” – your “nephesh” – means to devote your full self, your whole physical existence to Almighty God.

As Charles Spurgeon said, “[A]s we are to love God heartily, we are to love him with all our souls. Then we are to love him with all our life; for that is the meaning of it.” (Spurgeon, Charles Haddon. “The First and Great Commandment.” Spurgeon’s Sermons, vol. 29, 1883)

Now, what about loving God with all our STRENGTH? Well, we’ll discuss that another time.
