Why Was Polygamy Allowed in the Bible?

Welcome to Apologetics with Carl Kerby!

Today, we’re talking about polygamy in the Bible.

Shockingly, a recent Gallup poll found that 23% of Americans believe polygamy – having more than one spouse – is “morally acceptable.”

Some try to justify polygamy by citing Bible figures, such as David and Solomon, who had multiple wives.

But just because something is DESCRIBED doesn’t mean it’s PRESCRIBED. Every biblical account of polygamy has one thing in common – TROUBLE! There’s not one positive portrayal of polygamy anywhere in Scripture. God’s design for marriage is one man and one woman for a lifetime. When people step outside of God’s boundaries, they ALWAYS have problems.

As Christopher Ash of The Gospel Coalition said, “This boundary around sexual expression is a good and necessary protection of sexual order in any society. When it is broken, and especially when it is broken by a whole culture, sexual chaos ensues, and lives are desperately damaged.”

Was slavery condoned in the Bible? We’ll discuss that another time.
