Citizens Must Vote Next Tuesday

This post was originally published on this site.

Ronald Reagan said that God’s hand is on America in a very preferential way. I believe he was right. We have inherited a wonderful land of liberty and prosperity, and it is the personal duty of each of us to do what we can to safeguard that magnificent heritage.

Part of what makes that heritage worth protecting is something that most people in the history of the world have never had — the right of self-government. Americans get to choose who represents them and hold their government accountable. We have the right to show up and be counted, and we’re falling down on the job if we fail to use and properly maintain that which has been handed to us.

Next week, Americans will be choosing Members of Congress, United States Senators, governors, state legislators, judges, school board members, and countless other officials up and down the ballot. Just remember — somebody is going to be elected to every one of those offices. Now, make no mistake: these candidates on the ballot are not our saviors. We have only one Savior. But the men and women we send to Washington and to our state capitals will make decisions that shape the culture, the laws, and the future of this nation for generations to come.

That’s no small thing! The composition of the United States Senate determines which Supreme Court nominees get confirmed. Congressional majorities determine which laws get passed and which get stopped. State legislatures draw the boundaries that shape federal representation for a decade at a time. School boards choose the curriculum that forms the next generation. Every race on the ballot matters.

Each of us should encourage every citizen we know — especially fellow Christians — to embrace their citizenship not merely as a duty, but as an opportunity. It is an opportunity to participate in rebuilding the moral fabric of our nation. It’s an opportunity to elect men and women who will stand for constitutional government, for the sanctity of life, for parental rights, and for the values that made this country what it is.

This year calls for the active participation of every good American in the political process.

Apathy and unplugging from the process are not neutral! That silence is a vote for whatever comes next. So get informed, get involved, and get to the polls next week.
