Is War Ever Justified? (Part 1)

Welcome to Apologetics with Carl Kerby!

Today, we’re talking about whether war is justifiable.

It’s safe to say most people view war’s death and destruction as horrific. But are nations ever JUSTIFIED in going to war?

Well, Scripture gives numerous examples of armies in battle – sometimes at GOD’S direction! Although war is NOT ALWAYS justified, Scripture implies nations are responsible to protect their citizens militarily.

That’s why in Luke 14:31 Jesus uses warfare as an illustration, saying, “Or what king, going to make war against another king, sits not down first, and consults whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that comes against him with twenty thousand?” (KJV) Jesus’ military reference suggests warfare is simply an unfortunate reality in our fallen world and that God ordained governments to guard their nations’ people.

As Thomas Jefferson said, “The care of human life … is the first and only object of good government.”

And what else makes war justifiable? We’ll discuss that another time.
