A Christian’s Role in Government (Part 1)

Welcome to Apologetics with Carl Kerby!

Today we’re talking about a Christian’s role in government.

Libertarians believe the best government is NO GOVERNMENT! But is that really the attitude believers should have?

Well, Romans 13:1 tells us government was instituted by – wait for it – GOD! Believe it or not, this passage even calls government God’s “minister.” Now that doesn’t mean every government is good, but it does mean that God established an authority structure among nations to prevent the mass societal chaos that would occur if NOBODY was in charge.

As R.C. Sproul said, “Government is to minister as an instrument in the hand of God to promote justice and to punish evil.”

Christians should recognize governmental authority is God-ordained, accepting the responsibility of being good citizens by praying for their leaders, voting for godly candidates in elections, and considering serving the nation in some aspect of government themselves.

But what if the government presses a believer to violate Scripture? We’ll discuss that another time.
